How common is it for a hacker to get into a websites software and screw with the user.?
For example, a website in which has forums (and no, I am not talking about myspace) and screw up one persons post, not allow them access their email, hack into the users account and send out email under the account holders name.
Do they need your IP address to do this or just to know the companies software? Or if they know the companies software can they simply find your IP address without an exchange of and IM addy?

Change your password.

How common is it for a hacker to get into a websites software and screw with the user.?if a good hacker wants too badly enough, he can probably break into almost anything. Common ways to get into a website user account include figuring out the user's authentication credentials by targeting the actual user. This might involve a trojan horse or social engineering ..
Or he could target the security of the actual site .. search for open directories or password files left open... lots of different ways. Its probably not all that common, but it does happen .. change your password regularly.
