Can i sell my remix songs?According to the US Copyright law, a public performance of a work does not constitute copyright violation. However, a recorded performance of a work does.
You definitely can't sell other performers' work without their permission, even if you've re-mixed it.
You basically have to get a license from them for the use of their copyrighted work. This usually involves paying a royalty fee. That fee varies, but when I researched it a couple of years ago, the standard was .07 per song, per recording. So, if you were going to make a CD using the music, you would pay $7 for 100 CD's, $70 for 1000, etc.
Usually you pay up front for a set number of CDs, then if you decide you want to make more, you relicense the work.
Now, I'm not sure how that translates into digital sales, but I would assume it would be .07 per download.
Most major artists have pre-written licensing agreements that they will send you.
I would strongly suggest talking to a lawyer if you plan on doing a lot of licensing. Try to find someone familiar with entertainment law, or intellectual property rights.
I definitely wouldn't put anything up for sale until you're certain you're legally covered.
